A coat of arms is a complete composition, made up of distinct elements that together form what’s known as a heraldic achievement.
At its center is the shield, which carries the main symbols of the design. Above the shield sits the helmet, often crowned with a crest, the emblem that represents leadership or honor. Flowing from the helmet is the mantling, a decorative cloth that once protected armor from sunlight.
Some coats of arms also feature supporters — figures such as lions, horses, or mythological creatures that stand on either side of the shield. Beneath everything is usually a motto, a phrase expressing the family’s guiding belief.
Every part of a family coat of arms contributes to its meaning, combining artistry with symbolism in a tradition that has lasted for centuries.
